After a few months of working at Daimler-Benz, Rapp moved to Flugwerk Deutschland GmbH, where he headed a company branch.Flugwerk Deutschland GmbH transferred its headquarters to Brand near Aachen and began establishing branches in Germany. An aero-engine production branch was established at Schleissheimer Straße 288, Munich-Milbertshofen. With this development, Karl Rapp and Joseph Wirth were given the jurisdiction of an attorney to be a representative of the company in Munich. Rapp worked as the engineer and operations of the company and was involved in the construction of a monoplane and several biplanes. He also designed several aero-engines, including the FD 1416 aero-engine. However, the company liquidated and wound up operations in August 1916.After the liquidation of Flugwerk Deutschland GmbH, Karl Rapp alongside Julius Auspitzer founded the Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH on April 29, 1913. With a capital stock of RM 200,000 (RM meaning Reichsmark), the company started on the site of Flugwerk Deutschland after its liquidation. Auspitzer was the company’s sole shareholder, while Rapp was at the helm of operations of the company. The idea and primary goal of the new company was to build and sell different internal combustion engine varieties for aircraft and motor vehicles.In 1915, the company expanded, employing 370 workers. Different aircraft prototypes were built by Rapp Motorenwerke but were unsuccessful because of their weak designs. Despite all these, the company gained a particular reputation and became one of the vital Bavarian companies at the beginning of the First World War.Karl Rapp resigned from the company as the company approached a peak of success. He resigned around the time the Prussian Army Administration decided to order about 600 units of the BBE (an innovative high-altitude aero-engine originated by Max Friz), which could have appropriately reorganized the company’s legal structure. It is believed that Karl resigned due to ill-health, and immediately after his resignation was accepted, Rapp Motorenwerke Gmbh became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH (BMW GmbH). Franz Josef Popp became Rapp’s successor on October 4, 1917. Later, a new company took over the affairs of the employees and the manufacturing facilities, and BBE became a massive success under BMW IIIa.After his departure, Karl Rapp became employed again. He became the head of the Aeroengine Department and chief engineer of L.A. Riedlinger Machine Factory. The German founder and entrepreneur left Germany for Switzerland in 1934.
