Though no cause of death was initially given for McNair, his parents reported on July 16 that he died of heatstroke. This was confirmed by an ESPN report released in August, which stated that McNair suffered an apparent seizure at around 5 p.m., one hour before a 911 call was received. Officials at the university dispute the time of the seizure.An investigation launched immediately after his death revealed that he first complained of cramps, at 4:59 p.m. but did not arrive at the hospital for treatment until 6:36 p.m. and that trainers failed to recognize the signs and take aggressive cooling measures. Following the publication of an investigative story by ESPN on August 10, 2018, a second investigation into the sports culture of the Maryland football program was launched. Following the ESPN piece, one coach and two trainers were suspended, including Rick Court, the strength and conditioning coach described as the principal source of abuse.Court resigned nearly immediately after his suspension was lifted. Durkin was suspended.Following McNair’s death, ESPN interviewed current and former Maryland football players, as well as university officials and Maryland players, and published an investigation on August 10, 2018. The Jordan McNair Foundation hosted the inaugural annual Jordan McNair Golf Classic competition on May 31, 2019, at Turf Valley Resort in Howard County, Maryland. An auction was held to collect funds for the Foundation, whose purpose is to increase awareness of heat-related disorders.The University of Maryland football team stated in August 2018, before to the commencement of the 2018 season, that McNair’s uniform number 79 will be temporarily retired until 2020.
