Upsettingly, John’s father had passed away before he was born, he was a farmer and woolen manufacturer by profession. John Kay was educated till he was 14 by his mother, as she later remarried, leaving John with no formal education. John later married and had a couple of children of his own as well. John got married to Anne Holte sometime in the early or mid-1720s and had his first child, a daughter named Lettice in 1726. John named the device, ‘wheeled shuttle’ but the users of the device changed its name to ‘fly-shuttle’ which was ultimately called a flying shuttle owing to its continuous high speed. John had received a patent for this invention, it was called ‘a ‘wheeled shuttle’ for the handloom’. The uniqueness of the flying shuttle was that it allowed the shuttle which carried the weft to pass through the warp threads at a faster rate and over a greater span of cloth, thereby, accelerating the process of weaving.Even though no industrial unrest was expected as the device increased work productivity, it was opposed by Colchester weavers for the flying shuttle doubled the productivity of weaving but there was no change in the rate at which thread was spun. John then spent a couple of years making significant changes to his device but it was in vain as he faced several challenges going ahead including patent disputes and the trust of the buyers. John also faced issues regarding royalty collection when he went to Leeds in 1738 where the annual license fee had been fixed at 15 shillings a shuttle.Other Interesting John Kay Facts And TriviaAs John Kay was delegated to look over his father’s mill from a very young age, over the years he understood the functioning and looked to improve the machine involved in the process.John Kay also earned a patent for a machine that twisted, corded mohair, and worsted wool aiding the entire production process. Earlier when John apprenticed at a handloom reed maker’s workplace, he went on to design a metal substitute for the conventional reed.The product was an instant hit and John Kay sold it all over England. To sell this metal substitute, John Kay traveled across the country for a large amount of time fitting the wire reeds and earning money but ultimately returned back to his hometown.John Kay had a pretty large family with 10 siblings.
