About Jimmy Spencer James Peter Spencer, more popularly known as Jimmy Spencer, is a retired American racing driver, team owner, and television commentator.Jimmy Spencer rose to fame when he started competing in NASCAR. In the summer of 1994, he won two cups at the restrictor-plate races at Daytona and Talladega.Besides these two wins, Jimmy Spencer also won the National Modified Championship in 1986 and 1987, for which he was one of the top contenders. This event occurred when the smaller-schedule Whelen Modified Tour (then known as Winston Modified Tour) came into existence after the National Modified Championship was refashioned by NASCAR.Jimmy Spencer, in 1985, started off with the Busch Series, where he finished 19th for Frank Cicci Racing. Soon, he won his first Busch race in 1989 at Hickory Motor Speedway. Later, in the same season, he won two other races at Orange County and Myrtle Beach.Jimmy Spencer then moved to Winston Cup Series in 1989, where he contended for Buddy Baker’s team. In 1990, he raced for Rod Osterlund Racing, whereas in 1991, he drove for Travis Carter Motorsports. He has finished six times in the top 10, but his position dropped one place in the standing because of 12 DNFs. In 1992, he competed on behalf of Carter and later that year, he joined Bobby Allison Motorsports’ Cup. He continued this stint until 1994, after which he reunited with Travis Carter.In 1998, he formed his own NASCAR team, named Spencer Motor Ventures. 2001 was a good season for him, as he took the pole at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Lowe’s Motor Speedway. In 2002, Jimmy Spencer joined Chip Ganassi Racing. At the Bristol Motor Speedway, he was leading the race and that would have given him a streak of four top-five qualifying approaches. However, his race car got smashed by Kurt Busch’s. He was dismissed from Watkins Glen International, which led to the Ganassi organization being served a lawsuit because Spencer felt the dismissal violated his contract. Finally, in 2002, when Jimmy Spencer was driving for Phoenix Racing, he won his last Busch Series race. Due to his aggressive racing style, he was nicknamed Mr. Excitement.After his retirement, he has continued to be a popular face in the racing world. He hosted the NASCAR-inspired talk show, ‘What’s the Deal?’, on Speed.
