About Henri Fayol Henri Fayol (July 29, 1841 – November 19, 1925) was a French mining engineer, mining executive, author, and mine director who established Fayolism, a broad theory of corporate administration. This theory was created independently of scientific management but contemporaneously by him and his colleagues. He is largely regarded as the creator of modern management systems, alongside his contemporary Frederick Winslow Taylor. With the 1949 release of ‘General and Industrial Administration’, an English translation of Fayol’s 1916 work ‘Administration Industrielle et générale’, Fayol’s work became more widely known. Henri Fayol presented his general and industrial management theories, known as Fayolism, in this publication.Henri Fayol had previously authored several publications on mining engineering, beginning in the 1870s, as well as some preliminary studies on administration.Beginning in the 1870s, Henri Fayol published a series of publications on mining topics, including spontaneous coal heating (1879), coal bed development (1887), Commentry sedimentation, and plant fossils (1890).His initial works appeared in the French Bulletin de la Société de l’Industrie Minérale and, starting in the early 1880s, in the Comptes rendus de l’Académie des Sciences, the proceedings of the French Academy of Sciences.Fayolism-Fayol’s work was among the first complete presentations of general management philosophy. He postulated six forms of organizational activity, one of which was management, five primary functions of management, and fourteen principles of management.Henri Fayol, along with fellow engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor, is regarded as the father of contemporary management. He created the general philosophy of business administration known as Fayolism. He was a business administration thinker who provided a set of fourteen principles and five managerial functions that served as the foundation for business administration. His contributions to administration are noteworthy, and many modern management principles have evolved from his ideas. He wrote several studies on mining engineering and published administrative papers. The Industrial Revolution and its repercussions had a significant impact on himHe also observed the aftermath of the First World War. He insisted on teaching managerial skills in schools to prepare pupils for future professions in management. He campaigned for reform in the way subjects were taught in schools, believing that subjects not relevant in the workplace should be eliminated and practical training should be included.Childhood And EducationFayol was born in 1841 in a Constantinople suburb (now Istanbul). His father, a military engineer, was assigned superintendent of works to construct the Galata Bridge, which spans the Golden Horn.Henri Fayol graduated from the mining academy École Nationale Supérieure des Mines in Saint-Étienne in 1860 after the family returned to France in 1847.Family and RelationshipIn 1875, Henri Fayol married Adelade Celeste Marie Saule. Madeleine-Marie-Eugenie Fayol, Enri Joseph Fayol, and Marie-Celeste Fayol were their three children.Henri Fayol died in Paris on November 19, 1925. He was 84 years old.Shortly before his death, he wrote an important and contentious treatise, ‘The Industrial Disability of the State,’ shortly before his death.Fayol’s writings have withstood the test of time and have proven relevant and applicable even in today’s management arena. Taylor and Fayol were contemporaries, and Fayol learned a lot from them. Both individuals are regarded as the forefathers of current management philosophy.Career And Professional HighlightsBest Known For…At the age of 19, Fayol began working at the mining business Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambault-Decazeville in Commentry, Auvergne.Fayol was engaged as an engineer and trainee manager by Stéphane Mony, who had decided to hire the best engineers from the Saint-Étienne Mining School. Mony groomed Fayol to succeed him as manager of the Commentry mine and, later, as managing Director of Commentry-Fourchambault and Decazeville. He studied the origins of underground fires, how to prevent and fight them, how to reclaim burned mining areas, and how to comprehend the basin’s structure throughout his time in the mine. In 1888, Fayol was promoted to Managing Director. He implemented initiatives to improve mine worker conditions during his time as Director, such as allowing employees to work in groups and changing the division of labor. Later, he was given other mines to manage. In 1900, Fayol was elected to the Comité Central des Houillères de France, to the Comité des Forges, and to the Société de Commentry, Fourchambault et Decazeville. The board eventually decided to forsake the iron and steel business and the coal mines. As the new managing director, they appointed Henri Fayol. The corporation was on the edge of bankruptcy at the moment. Fayol’s extensive administrative skills were critical in turning around the company’s fortunes. When he resigned in 1918, the company was financially sound and one of Europe’s largest industrial conglomerates. He built his administration approach partly based on his management expertise. At around the same time that Frederick Winslow Taylor released Principles of Scientific Management in 1916, he advocated his views in Administration Industrielle et Générale. Fayol became the Director of the Centre of Administrative Studies in Paris after retiring.Henri Fayol’s book ‘Administration Industrielle et Générale,’ where he described his job experiences, was released in 1916. In the English translation of this book, he offered his famous Fayolism idea.In 1921, he authored ‘The Industrial Disability of the State’, in which he argues that a capitalist economy should be left to function with the least amount of government intervention and control possible.Other Interesting Henri Fayol Facts And TriviaIn the realm of scientific organization of work, Fayol was influenced by Frederick Taylor’s thesis, which arose in the second stage of the Industrial Revolution.Specialization, according to Henri Fayol, boosts employee efficiency and productivity. Many Fayol opposed Frederick Taylor’s antihumanism strategy.
