Interestingly, Carolus-Duran was not the name of the painter at his birth. He was named Charles Auguste Émile Durand. The name Carolus-Duran was adopted by the painter much later when he went to Paris for his higher education in 1853.The French painter was born the son of a hotel owner. The beginnings of his journey as an artist came under the tutelage of Augustin-Phidias Cadet de Beaupré. He would study in his hometown in France, Lille at the Académie de Lille. Interestingly, he would be a student under the local sculptor first. Following this, he took up the art of painting under François Souchon. His work with François Souchon began when the French painter was merely 15 years of age. François Souchon was one of the pupils of the former Neoclassicism period of art, Jacques Louis David. This was a two-year period of apprenticeship under François.The artist then chose to leave Lille and then move on to Paris. It was here that the name Carolus-Duran took hold. He went to Paris in the year 1853. During his years spent in Paris, Carolus went to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The academy is one of the five academies of the Institut de France and remains one of the most prominent educational societies in all of France.Family And RelationshipThe French painter would marry Pauline Croizette. Pauline worked as a miniaturist as well as a pastellist. The pair met when Pauline Croizette was aiding in a picture for Carolus-Duran. She posed for one of the portraits of Carolus. The piece of art that Carolus worked on by the name ‘The Lady of The Gloves’ had Pauline Croizette posing in the painting, this was during the year 1869. Soon after, the couple got married. Carolus and Pauline went on to have three children. The oldest of the three children of Carolus and Pauline was Marie-Anne. Marie-Anne went on to marry a very famous playwright by the name of Georges Feydeau. He lived out his days in a small villa with his wife.Career And Professional HighlightsBest Known For…The professional career of Carolus-Duran came shortly after he became a student of the very famous artist François Souchon. Carlos had set up one of his first exhibitions when he was in Paris. The first exhibition of Carlos was in the year 1859. It would be set up at the Salon. The exhibition at Salon was one of the leading reasons for his popularity, and he would win a gold medal during a later period of his life for it. Carolus-Duran began studying at the Académie Suisse, founded by Martin François Suisse.After this, in 1862, Carolus-Duran took to traveling and looking at different artworks of Europe. He would go on to travel to Rome and Spain on a scholarship granted by the city of Lille. It was this time that saw him move away from the Courbet style and the instruction he received at the French academy, and his interest was diverted to the artworks of Diego Velázquez.Among the first of his artworks that found fame was the one known as ‘The Assassination’. His studio in Paris became incredibly popular. The studio, known as ateliers, was one of the best in all of Paris.In 1867, he became part of a group called the Société Japonaise du Jinglar. This group met every month in a place called Sèvres, to get together for a regular dinner ‘à la Japonaise’.Following 1870, Carolus-Duran focused his art specifically on portraits. He found a studio on Boulevard du Montparnasse, where he began his work as an art instructor. As an art instructor, he gave painting lessons to some very prominent artists.In the year 1890, he was among the co-founders of Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In addition to this, Carolus-Duran was elected as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1904.
