He won his first main event that year in Oshkosh. In 1977, Kulwicki switched from using dirt tracks to paved ones. Around this time, he also collaborated on the design, engineering, and construction of a unique car with significantly more torsional rigidity than other late models, alongside racecar builder Greg Krieger.His NASCAR career started in the early ’80s. In 1984, Alan Kulwicki competed in four NASCAR Busch Grand National Series races. At his maiden NASCAR race, Kulwicki qualified in the second-best position. Bill Terry, a car owner, decided to sponsor Kulwicki for Winston Cup races, but the deal soon fell through. Kulwicki had no sponsors, little budget, a racecar, and a borrowed pickup truck when he entered NASCAR, the most expensive and competitive form of stock car racing in the US. Undeterred and steadfast in his desire to make a name for himself, Kulwicki started his racing team, and with only a few crew members, he managed to clinch the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year honor. Alan Kulwicki came very close to winning the 1987 Winston cup race but ultimately lost to Dale Earnhardt on the very last lap of the race. It was in 1988 that Kulwicki finally managed to win the Winston Cup, defeating Ricky Rudd. After the race, he turned around and performed what he called a Polish victory lap by going around the course counterclockwise. Numerous NASCAR winners later adopted the Polish victory lap. He won the Winston Cup championship in 1992. In the 1993 championship, Alan Kulwicki was in the 9th position after finishing five races.
